Sergeant Thomas Cooper of H Company, was one of 19 sergeants of the 1st Battalion killed at Isandhlwana, along with 5 Colour-Sergeants and 5 specialist sergeants. Other ranks killed included 2 lance-sergeants, 15 corporals, 9 lance-corporals, 11 drummers, a drum-major, an orderly Room Clerk and 337 privates.
