Private Jesse Lockhurst

This photo was taken at Brompton barracks in Chatham, Kent at the time of Queen Victoria's visit. She met various wounded men, amongst whom was Private Jesse Lockhurst who lost his right eye and had his jaw bone badly damaged by the shot he is holding. The Queen's visit took place on 16th April 1856 but Lockhurst is wearing his pre-1855 uniform which was a red coatee with white lace across the chest, and buff collar and cuffs. He has large tufted wings on his shoulder for a flank company. The black undress cap has a brass 31 on the front.
