Drummer 1702

The illustration here is based on a description of the uniforms of Lucas's regiment written up in the London Gazette: A drummer with a light bob wig and light grey coat lined with red, crimson worsted loops, white buttons and red breeches and waistcoat. A griffin's head and a coronet, the Colonel's crest, was embroidered on the back of the coat.

The artist, Pierre Turner, has not put a wig on the man's head. The drum also displays a griffin and coronet. It was the custom to put drummers of infantry regiments in coats of the reverse colours, so that the soldiers of the regiment wore red coats faced grey and drummers wore coats of grey, faced red.
