Colonel's Epaulette 1830

Epaulettes became more substantial in the 1820s. This 1830 officer's epaulette has a circular embroidered royal cypher of William VI who reigned from 1830 to 1837. The star of the Order of the Thistle was used by Scottish regiments as a rank badge while English regiments had the star of the Order of the Bath. It can be seen on an epaulette in a detailed print of a 42nd officer 1808. The embroidered crown together with the star indicated Colonel rank. Lieutenant-colonels had a crown only, and majors had a star only. The small gilt button above the crown is similar to the button seen on this page.
