Officer's Belt Plate 1845-50

Illustration of the belt plate worn by officers of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, from Major Parkyn's book on beltplates and buttons. It is of burnished gilt with silver 42 and Union wreath, with Queen Victoria's crown above. In 1850 this was changed to a gilt matted plate with a burnished rim. In the centre of the plate was a cut silver star of the Order of the Thistle with 42 inside a gilt circle. A Sphinx was below a wreath of thistles that surrounded the circle. All in gilt except for the star.
