Epaulettes c1850

This photo was published as Lot 75 in the Christies Militaria auction catalogue of June 1990. The epaulettes and the chamois-lined fitted metal case are of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment but no date is given. However, the style of the epaulette with its slender fringes matches photos of officers in the Crimea so must be of the later style before epaulettes were discontinued in 1856. The embroidered thistle badge is mentioned in the 1834 Dress Regulations so must have been used from that date. The maker's name is on the metal case, W Buckmaster, no.3 New Burlington St., London.
