Piper and Drummer 1743

The Highland companies had pipers from the earliest times, the captain of the company having his own piper. Pipers were used for inspiring the men in battle and providing tunes on the march. This print is from Germany and based on observation of the 43rd Regiment, as the Black Watch were at that time, whilst on campaign in Flanders.' The drummer, on the right, was used on the march and for conveying orders. Another print of the Flanders campaign shows drummers, and pipers playing instruments that could not be called bagpipes.
