Piper Wotherspoon DCM

Piper Wotherspoon of the Black Watch was photographed here in 1874. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his inspiring playing under dangerous conditions in the Ashanti War of 1874. Queen Victoria presented him with his medal on the regiment's return to Britain. In Forbes's regimental history of the 42nd he is named as Wotherspoon although some sources refer to him as James Weatherspoon. He wears crown collar badges on his green doublet, and a piper's bonnet badge. The gauntlet cuffs were introduced in 1872, to replace the slash cuffs. On his shoulders there are wings which were probably added in the same year. He is in marching order, with folded blanket and valise on his back. The kilt is in the predominantly red Royal Stewart tartan.
