Magdala

This painting by R Simkin is titled '4th (King's Own Royal) Regiment - Battle before Magdala, 6th April 1868. This must depict the action when 6,000 of Theodore's troops swarmed down the hillside and advanced on the British/Indian force. The regiment maintained it's nerve as this horde approached, firing continuously. The Abyssinians lost 700 killed and 1,200 wounded by the end of the battle and were driven back. The men are armed with Snider-Enfield rifles. An officer stands on the right with a bugler next to him. The bugle's cords are of the Royal colours, blue, red and yellow.
