Major Sir Alexander Hope Bt


Hope's home was at Kerse House on the Firth of Forth. He entered the army as an ensign in the 18th Foot on 21st June 1744 and purchased a lieutenancy in August 1747. On 18th may 1756 he bought his way into the 52nd which became the 50th in the following year. He commanded a company with the rank of Captain and became a major in May 1769. He retired on 26th Sept 1772 after 28 years continuous service. The portrait was painted after the regiment returned from the fighting in Germany in 1763. The army list for that year lists the officers as:
