Malplaquet

The Duke of Argyle (Argyll) took over as Colonel of the Buffs in Feb 1707 when Charles Churchill was appointed Colonel of the Coldstream Guards. He had fought at the battle of Ramillies where he led a regiment of Scotsmen in the Dutch service. This ended with the men becoming stuck in a morass. He was a major-general at the age of 28 and at the battle of Malplaquet commanded a number of regiments, but in this postcard he is depicted leading his own regiment, the Buffs through the woods with the grenadiers to the fore.
