Fontenoy

This painting depicts the British and Hanoverians fired upon by the French on three sides while some make their escape to the rear. Some of the French artillery are in a small square fortress on the left of the picture. The Guards are in the front line of the British being attacked by a huge force of cavalry. In the foreground, Marshal Saxe and his staff survey their triumphant victory. Painting by Van Blarenberghe.
