Private Samuel Vickery VC


On 20th October 1897 during the attack on the Dargai Heights, Tirah, India, Private Vickery ran down the slope and rescueda wounded comrade under heavy fire, bringing him back to cover. He subsequently distinguished himself in the Waran Valley, killing three of the enemy who attacked him when he was separated from his company.

Samuel Vickery was born in Wambrook, Chard, Dorset on 6th Feb 1873. He was promoted to corporal in the 1st battalion Dorsetshire Regiment. He died in Cardiff on 20th June 1952 aged 79.
