Pillbox Emplacements

The British and their allies encountered German-built concrete pillboxes for the first time at the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917. They were constructed so that they could only be entered from underground. This artist's impression of a bomb attack on a pillbox shows an over-large slit window only on the front wall.
