The Gordons

Macdonald in the Sudan

Hector Macdonald wears the uniform of an officer in the Egyptian Constabulary. He left the Gordon Highlanders in 1885 and joined the Constabulary to remain in Egypt and Sudan. A year before he joined them, this unit, commanded by Valentine Baker a disgraced ex-10th Hussar officer, had been humiliated at the first battle of El Teb. Macdonald served with them from 1885-1888. He remained serving in the Sudan until after the battle of Omdurman in 1898.
