The Gordons


Lance-Corporal John Mackay VC


On 20th May 1900 during the action on Crow's nest Hill, Johannesburg, Corporal John Frederick Mackay repeatedly dashed forward under heavy rifle fire from the Boers at short range to attend to wounded comrades of the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders. He managed to carry one of the men to the cover of a boulder. He was awarded the VC, gazetted 10th Aug 1900. John was born in Edinburgh on 6th June 1873. He served in the First World War and rose through the ranks to the level of Lieutenant-Colonel. He died in Nice on 9th Jan 1930.
