Lance-Corporal, 1917

The rank of lance-corporal in the Guards regiments is indicated with two stripes. The grenade badge over the stripes is a regimental NCO's badge. The red marks above the grenade are for the 3rd Guards light trench mortar battery. He carries the barrel of a 3in Stokes trench howitzer, and has a gas-mask in a webbing bag hung around his neck. The steel helmets were first issued in March 1916.
