Grenadiers in the BEF

This excellent photo taken by Christina Broom at Wellington Barracks shows men of the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards parading prior to embarkation for France in August 1914. The men of the British Expeditionary Force were professional soldiers who had enlisted before the war. Many of the senior officers and senior NCOs had served in the Boer War. The army that went to France and Flanders later in 1915 was largely made up of untried recruits.
