Map of the Somme 15 Sep 1916

The objective on 15 Sep 1916 was for the 4th Army to capture Morval, Lesboeufs, Gueudecourt and Flers. This map is taken from Sir Frederick Ponsonby's history of the Grenadier Guards in the Great War. The Guards Division had the 6th Division on its right and the 14th Division on its left. The 3rd Guards Brigade was in reserve, consisting of the 1st and 4th grenadiers, the 2nd Scots Guards and the 1st Welsh Guards. They were east of Trones Wood which is just off the bottom of the map. The Quadrilateral can be seen in the lower part of the map, east of Ginchy. It is a star shaped redoubt with bastions and a central blockhouse. The Guards Division field of operation is bordered by a red dotted line while the objectives are marked with differing red lines.
