Major Humphrey St Leger Stucley


Born in 7 Jun 1877 at Exbury, Hampshire. The son of Sir George Stucley Stucley 1st Bart. and Louisa Granville. He fought in Egypt and the Sudan in 1898, and in the Boer War. He was second in command of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards of the BEF, in the early part of World War One. He was killed at the first battle of Ypres on 29 Oct 1914, aged 37. When the King's Company was faced with a horde of charging Germans he went out in front to inspire the men, facing certain death. He was married to Dorothy Beatrice Rose Carew on 27 Oct 1908. They had 2 sons: Peter Francis Carew Stucley and Lewis Robert Carew Stucley born in 1909 and 1910. They lived at 37 Sloane Gardens, Chelsea.
