Private W E Holmes VC


On 9 Oct 1918, at Cattenieres in France, Private Holmes, of the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, carried two men under the most intense fire. While he was attending to a third case was severely wounded. In spite of this he continued to carry in the casualties. Shortly after he was mortally wounded and died the same day. William Edgar Holmes was from Wood Stanway in Gloucestershire, born on 26 June 1895. His name is on a memorial at Carnieres Communal Cemetery in France, and at Didbrook Church in Gloucestershire. His VC was posthumously gazetted on 26 Dec 1918.
