Private James Miller VC

On 30th/31st July 1916 at Bazentin-le-Petit, France, the 7th Battalion was consolidating its position and Private Miller, aged 26, was ordered to take an important message under heavy shell and rifle fire and bring back a reply at all costs. He was compelled to cross the open, and on leaving the trench was almost immediately mortally wounded. In spite of this he managed to deliver the message and stagger back with the answer, falling dead at the feet of the officer.

James miller was born at Withnell, near Chorley in Lancashire on 4th May 1890. There is a memorial to him at Dartmoor Cemetery in France and also at The Priory, Lancaster.
