The Northumberland Fusiliers

Prisoners at Nooitgedacht

The 2nd Battalion were captured twice by the Boers, at Stormberg and at Nooitgedacht. This illustration was based on a sketch by one of the prisoners, Lieut Capell. The men in slouch hats are probably Yeomanry who were sent to offer assistance to the beleaguered Fusiliers during the battle. The upright posts have strands of wire running between them, and a Boer guard can be seen on the left of the picture.
