Lieutenant-General Granville George Chetwynd-Stapylton


Born in London in 1823, Granville Chetwynd-Stapylton was commissioned into the 13th Light Infantry in June 1839 and went to Kabul in 1841. He served in the 1st Afghan War including the forcing of the Jagdalak Pass, the defence of Jellalabad and the recapture of Kabul. He returned from India in 1845 but went back there in 1854 as ADC to the Commander-in-Chief East Indies. He was a major in 1857 and reached the rank of colonel 8 years later.

He was promoted to Major-General in 1870 and Lieutenant-General in 1881 when he retired. He was Colonel of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment from 23rd Sep 1896 until 16th April 1902 when he was made Colonel of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He held that command until his death at the age of 92 in London on 28th April 1915.
