Brigadier-General Wallace Duffield Wright VC CB CMG DSO



In 1903 Wallace Wright was a lieutenant in the 1st Battalion Queen's Royal West Surreys, attached to the Northern Nigeria Regiment in the West African Frontier Force. These African troops were employed in the Kano-Sokoto Expedition in the Cameroons. On 26th Feb 1903, Lt Wright, with one other officer and 44 men were charged by a determined force of 3000 which included 1000 mounted men. The attacks lasted 2 hours but ended with the enemy retreating having taken heavy losses. Wright and his men pursued them to ensure that they were dispersed. Wright had set a fine example of leadership and military skill which inspired his men.

Wallace Duffield Wright was born in Gibraltar on 20th Sep 1875. He served in the Cameron Highlanders during World War 1 and commanded the 8th Infantry Brigade after the war, until 1922. He was awarded the VC (Gazetted 11th Sep 1903), the Legion d'Honneur, the CMG in 1916 and the DSO in 1918. From 1932 to 1950 he was a Gentleman-at-Arms and during World War 2 was in the Home Guard. He died at Chobham, Surrey on 25th Mar 1953.
