Other Rank's Helmet Badge 1889-1901

The badge of the Royal Scots is based on the Order of the Thistle. This emblem is in white metal placed on a brass universal crowned star with laurel wreath. The centre of the badge is in brass and is the figure of St Andrew with the saltire cross and scroll inscribed THE ROYAL SCOTS. It was unusual for an other rank's helmet badge to be bi-metal. The crown is Queen Victoria's so this pattern lasted from 1889 to 1901. The helmet was replaced by the Kilmarnock bonnet in 1903. badge courtesy of Bosleys
