Corporal Harry Beet VC


During the South African War, at Wakkerstroom on 22nd April 1900, a company of the Derbyshire Regiment and 2 squadrons of Yeomanry withdrew from a position near a farm under a ridge held by the Boers. Corporal Beet saw a wounded corporal lying on the ground and remained behind to tend to him and place him behind cover.

He bound his wounds and exchanged fire with the enemy, preventing them from approaching. After dark a medical officer reached them and they were able to take the wounded man to safety. For this action he was awarded the VC, Gazetted on 12th February 1901.

Harry Churchill Beet was born on 1st April 1873 at Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Following his exploits in the South African War he rose to the rank of Captain and moved to Canada. He died at Rupert, Vancouver on 10th January 1946.
