Sergeant Albert White VC

Albert White sacrificed his life for his fellow soldiers of the 2nd Battalion during World War 1. When he saw that the advance of his company was held up by an enemy machine-gun he ran forward to neutralise it but failed to reach the gun. He fell, riddled with bullets and died immediately. This happened at Monchy-le-Preux in France, on 19th May 1917. His posthumus award of the VC was published in the London Gazette on 27th June that year. He was 21 years old and came from Kirkdale, Liverpool.
