Captain Julian Gribble VC


Captain Gribble was in command of a company at Beaumetz, Hermies Ridge near Velu in France. On 23rd March 1918 he and his men were ordered to hold on at all costs even though they were isolated. Gribble inspired his men with determination and he refused to retire. He was wounded in the fight and captured while unconscious. He was kept prisoner at Mainz and regained his health, but sadly he caught pneumonia and died on 24th Nov 1918 before he received his VC. He was buried at Niederrzwehren in Germany.

Julian Royd Gribble was born in London on 5th Jan 1897. His family were wealthy and he was educated at Eton. After Sandhurst he entered the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in May 1915. He was in the 10th Battalion.
