The Warwickshire Regiment

Private Arthur Hutt VC

Private Hutt's prodigious acts of heroism were carried out on 4th Oct 1917 at Terrier Farm near Poelcapelle in Belgium. Hutt took command of his platoon after his officers and NCOs became casualties. The enemy position was held by around 50 Germans, but undeterred, Hutt ran forward and shot an officer and three men. The rest surrendered. His platoon had moved too far forward and they had to withdraw while Hutt covered them with sniper fire. He also carried a wounded man to shelter and went back to carry four more, under heavy fire.

Arthur Hutt was born in Earlsden, Coventry on 12th Feb 1889. Despite his fine display of leadership he only reached the rank of corporal. He lived to the age of 65 and died in Coventry on 14th April 1954.
