The Warwickshire Regiment

Captain C W C Wasey MC

Cyril Walter Carleton Wasey was educated at Eton and graduated from Sandhurst in March 1913 to join the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshires. After war broke out the battalion arrived in France on 22nd August 1914. Four days later he was on the retreat from Mons. The battalion marched parallel to a German column, eventually out-running them. During this time he gave great assistance to the French adjoining the Warwicks, for which he received the Legion of Honour. He was mentioned in Despatches dated 31st May 1915 and was wounded twice, one of which involved a broken jaw and a period in hospital. His Military Cross was gazetted on 1st Jan 1917.

He applied to join the RFC and qualified as an observer. In Sep 1917 he returned to France and flew in RE8 two-seater observation aircraft. He went on 18 trips in October but on the 28th Oct 1917 his plane was attacked by two enemy aircraft which Wasey fought off with 250 rounds. However, they fired a parting shot which hit him in the head, killing him instantly.
