Lieutenant Richard Turner VC


'On 7th Nov 1900 during the action at Komati River, South Africa, when the guns were in danger of being captured, Lt Turner, although he had been twice wounded, dismounted and deployed his men at close quarters and drove off the enemy, thus saving the guns.'

Richard Earnest William Turner was born in Quebec on 25th July 1871. He had a successful military career in the Royal Canadian Dragoons. He commanded the Canadian Brigade of Infantry and the 2nd Canadian Division. He was GOC Canadian Forces in England 1916-18. He also won the Legion d'Honneur and Croix de Guerre avec Palme (France) and the Order of the White Eagle with Swords (Russia). He finished up as Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Turner VC KCB KCMG DSO.
