Brigadier F M W Harvey VC MC CdeG CD



He was born in Meath, Ireland on 1st Sept 1888. He joined Strathcona's Horse in 1916 and won the VC at Guyencourt on 27th March 1917. He was a lieutenant when the regiment attacked with him commanding the leading troop on horseback. They suffered heavy casualties from rapid fire at close range but when they came upon a barb-wired trench containing a machine-gun and many enemy soldiers, Harvey dismounted and ran straight to the trench. He jumped the wire, shot the gunner and captured the gun.

He commanded Strathcona's Horse from 15th Dec 1939 to 10th July 1940 and was Colonel of the regiment from 1958 until 1966. He died at the age of 91 in Calgary on 24th August 1980
