The Yeomanry

Private c1857

The introduction of the tunic in 1856 was a radical change for the Warwickshire Yeomanry who had worn the waist length scarlet jacket since 1833. This photo taken around 1857 shows a private in the blue tunic with white facings and white braiding on the collar and cuffs. The photo is rare, and useful for the view of the shako. The white cap lines are wound around the body of the cap and the drooping horsehair plume is shown. The tunic is fastened with hooks and eyes but looks unsatisfactory because of the way it falls open below the waist and separates just below the collar. The pouch-belt is slung over the left shoulder, and the white sword-belt, not seen here, was worn over the tunic. His trousers have a double white stripe, while previously the ORs had double red stripes.
