The Yeomanry

Group at Camp c1906

The Quartermaster has a different uniform in this photo, which is the blue undress frock with plain blue collar. This is also worn, with a crown on the sleeve, by the Regimental Sergeant-Major, who sits next to Lieutenant Richardson, and wears a blue and silver pillbox cap. The other officer has a blue frock with white collar but round silver buttons instead of olivets. A brown leather Sam Browne belt is worn with this, and a field service cap. Richardson is in khaki service dress which has the newly introduced (c1904) slashed cuff design with two stars to denote his rank. The first pattern of officers' khaki uniform had the closed stand and fall collar but the lapelled collar was soon brought in so that a white shirt and tie could be worn. Khaki shirts were introduced c1912. Six of the men wear the slouch hat that was worn in the South African war of 1900-01 but this became a general item of head-dress after the war until c1908. None of these men wear medal ribbons for service in the Boer War. On the left are a corporal in khaki service dress and blue and white pillbox cap. In front of him sits a hatless Squadron Sergeant-Major smoking a pipe.
