The Yeomanry

Officers in Dress Uniform 1911

This detail from a group photo taken at the Annual Training in 1911 shows officers of the Warwickshire Yeomanry in dismounted review order. One officer in a forage cap, at the back, wears the blue serge frock with white collar and silver olivet buttons, and shoulder chains. He is Captain Valentine who was killed in Nov 1917 leading his squadron against the enemy artillery at Huj. The officers wear their black fur busbies with tall, cut ostrich feather plumes which replaced the egret feathers c1900. The field officer, sitting on the left, with heavy braiding on his cuff, is Major Richardson. He has the older style egret feathers on his busby but the white background makes it difficult to see this. The captain sitting next to him does not have the extra braiding on his cuff, but another captain in the same photo (not seen here) has the circlets of braid which were supposed to be discontinued c1902. It seems that the yeomanry were not the only ones to be slow to make the changes required by Dress Regulations. One officer in the group (also not seen here), who may be the adjutant, Captain Stephen of the 3rd Hussars, also has circlets of braid on his cuff and collar. However the regular hussar officer seen in this detail is a captain in the 13th Hussars, sitting on the right of the photo. His uniform has gold lace, gimp and braid, but no extra braid for his rank. He wears gold aiguillettes indicating that he is the ADC for the inspecting general officer.
