The Yeomanry

Trooper in Service Dress 1914

The yeomanry were issued with khaki service dress prior to the outbreak of war in 1914. This was before it was realised that they would serve in the Middle East. The man in the photo is well mounted and has his sword scabbard attached to the off side of his saddle. This is so that the rifle can be carried in a bucket on the near side with a strap around his left arm. Thus he would be able to use his right arm to wield the sword which appears to be the old pre-1912 type. There is a bayonet on the right side of his waist-belt. The tunic had a white lanyard worn on the left shoulder.
