Francis Richard Charles Guy Greville was born on 9th Feb 1853, styled Lord Brooke until 1893 when he inherited the title earl of Warwick. He was the son of the 4th Earl and Lady Anne, the daughter of the 9th Earl of Wemyss. 'He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. 'He was a JP in both Warwickshire and Essex and a senior Freemason rising to Deputy Grand Master under the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII. 'He had 5 children by his wife Countess Frances, although the last two children were reputedly fathered by one of her lovers, millionaire Joseph Laycock. 'A Spy caricature of him in full uniform was published by Vanity Fair in May 1890 entitled, 'He sits for Colchester'. The article that accompanied it referred to his time in India with Lord Lytton in the 1870s where he proved himself to be a good shot and sportsman. 'Apparently he 'disliked butchery' but managed to kill seven tigers whilst on foot or on the back of an elephant. It also says that he, 'is not anxious to sit in the Upper House as his father's son, for he has the idea that a Peer should justify his position by his own merit.' 'Three years later he inherited the Earldom and took his seat in the House of Lords.
