The Yeomanry

Subaltern's Mess Jacket 1896-1910

The mess jacket worn by lieutenants and second lieutenants did not have a collar edged with silver lace like those of captains and above. They had silver gimp edging with silver Russia braid tracing around the inside edge and forming a figured design at the front and back of the collar. The cuffs had the same gimp loop as the senior officers but only traced by a single line of braid either side. The figuring top and bottom of the loop was more decorative than the pre-1896 mess/stable jacket, and captains had small circlets of braid added all the way around the edge of the gimp.
