The Yeomanry

Field Officer, Full Dress 1842

This painting, signed and dated Edward Hayes 1842, is said to be a portrait of Earl de Grey, Colonel of the regiment. The star badge on his pelisse is indistinct and although the Earl was a Knight of the Garter he was not awarded that honour until 1844. Also, the face does not bear a resemblance with the portrait by F Grant painted in 1845. However, the uniform is the blue jacket and pelisse with silver cord decoration and scarlet shako. The trousers were not blue but dark grey. The sabretache is scarlet with silver embroidery, the pattern that remained until the end of the century.
