The Yeomanry

Sergeant-Major, Review Order 1896

The senior Warrant Officer here is probably the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Yorkshire Hussars. He has four gold lace chevrons on his right arm. They are on scarlet backing cloth and have the embroidered Princess of Wales feathers badge placed on the stripes, also with scarlet backing. There is a gold embroidered crown over the stripes. He wears the blue jacket and his lace, braid and cord are all silver. The waist sash is of crimson and yellow worsted material although he would be expected to have gold barrels and acorn ends to the cords. He has served in a regular regiment and seen service in Egypt, in 1882, for which he has received medals. The tall busby has the white metal rose badge and the cap-lines are of gold cord.

This image is a detail from a group photo that was published in the Navy and Army Illustrated on 4th Sept 1896. The caption explains that this is the Aldershot School for Yeomanry and Volunteer Cavalry set up the train the permanent staff of Yeomanry units. The WO standing behind him is from the West Somerset Yeomanry.
