The Yeomanry

Major T L Dugdale MP

Thomas Lionel Dugdale was born on 20th July 1897 and was a prominent Conservative MP, for Richmond. 'He was PPS to Baldwin in 1935 and in Winston Churchill's government was appointed Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, in 1951. 'He famously resigned over the Crichel Down Affair in which some land appropriated by the government in Dorset was withheld from the previous owner, George Martin. 'Martin had influence in high places and eventually managed to regain his land. 'Dugdale was involved in the civil service mishandling of the matter but he was made to look like an innocent party in the affair. 'His resignation was looked upon as a matter of honour.

He served in the Scots Greys in World War 1 and became adjutant of the Yorkshire Hussars after the war, remaining with them during World War 2. The photo shows him in the uniform of the Yorkshire Hussars c1930. In 1945 he was styled Sir Thomas Dugdale but in 1959 he gained the title 1st Baron Crathorne. 'He was involved with NATO and the Council of Europe. He died on 26th March 1977.'
