The Yeomanry

C W E Duncombe CBE TD

Charles William Ernest Duncombe was commanding officer of the Yorkshire Hussars from 1908 to 1912. He had served with the regiment in South Africa. He is photographed here in 1908 when the regiment were in camp at Knavesmire. He is the figure in full dress on the left of the picture, facing the men. Next to him is Captain and Adjutant O B Walker and then Major Lord Deramore who succeeded him in command. The NCO in full dress is Sergeant-Major Rookes who has a waist sash and sword. The men are parading for church service and wear their dress uniforms but with undress caps and no side-arms. Pouch-belts were worn only by officers after 1902.

Colonel Charles Duncombe edited a book about Ryesdale in 1935. He also established the Lilian Eldee Scholarship in 1905. Lilian was his wife who is the subject of a painting (1901) by her father Archibald Stuart.

Duncombe is the tallest officer, in profile, wearing full dress on the left of the photo.
