The Yeomanry

Lord Grantham, Earl de Grey KG PC FRS

Earl de Grey was born Thomas Robinson but became Lord Grantham at the age of 5 when his father, the 2nd baron Grantham died. His mother was Mary, the daughter of Jemima Yorke, 2nd Marchioness Grey. Thomas had a younger brother, Frederick who, as Lord Goderich, became Prime Minister for 5 months. He married Henrietta, daughter of the Earl of Enniskillen, in 1805 and they had two daughters. In 1833 Thomas inherited the title of Earl de Grey from his aunt, and also Wrest Park estate in Silsoe, Bedfordshire. He spent the next 6 years re-designing it. During that time, in 1834, he was appointed first president of the Institute of British Architects (Royal, in 1837). He was a Knight of the Garter, and Colonel Commandant of the Yorkshire Hussars for 40 years until his death in 1859.
