This painting by John Lavery was painted in 1919. It does show how a typical pre-IWGC cemetery may have looked. On the one hand, there is a vast quantity of crosses. On the other hand, these temporary markers would not withstand any significant stretch of time and so explains partially the move to more permanent cemeteries. |
