Notes Illustrious had round barbettes rather than the normal pear-shaped ones. She helped introcduce the much lighter and effective cordite as propellant. This replacement of Gunpowder allowed the ship to carry up to 50% more ammunition supply. She spent World War I as a guardship. In 1915, her 12inch guns were removed and added to the Lord Clive class of monitors.
