Other Ranks’ Shako 1869-78

The shako worn by the rank and file was similar in design to the officers’ but of inferior quality. Instead of gold braid the men had a narrow line of red braid around the top and a wide line of braid round the bottom. This was about an inch wide and was black with red edges. The badge on the front, and the chin chain, were of the same design as the officers’ but made of gilding metal, an alloy of brass and copper. NCOs had a gilt badge. There were ventilation ornaments on the sides, a hook at the back for the chin-chain, and the white-over-red ball tuft mounted on a small plinth of woven black thread.
