Sergeants and Warrant Officers 1898

This photo of sergeants and warrant officers of the 2nd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, was taken in Peshawar, India c1898. Most of them have medals which may be for service in the Tirah Campaign of 1897-98. They wear blue field service caps which were taken into general use c1896 to replace the glengarry. The tunics are the 1881 pattern undress frocks; scarlet with a white collar. A more up-to-date pattern frock was introduced in 1890 but it must have been too late for the 2/Yorkshires who sailed for India in that year. Seated on chairs, are, from the left, four colour sergeants, then a senior warrant officer whose rank we cannot see, In the centre, with a dark moustache is the Battalion Sergeant-Major with a crown badge on his right sleeve. These two WO1s have officer style peaked forage caps. Next to the RSM is an officer holding a stick. He wears a frock with a high white collar, and white pointed cuffs. There are two other WOs on the other side of him, then three more colour-sergeants.  Lying on the ground on the left side are the Sergeant-Drummer (drum-major) and the armourer staff sergeant. Both have four inverted chevrons on their right forearm.
