Sergeant-Major A J Hughes


A J Hughes was the battalion sergeant-major in the 1st  Battalion and promoted to Quartermaster in the 3rd Battalion. He originally enlisted as a private soldier in the Coldstream Guards on 15 Feb 1884. He reached the rank of RSM in the 19th Regiment on 8 Sep 1891. Whilst serving in the Boer War he was promoted, in October 1901, to the rank of Honorary Lieutenant and Quartermaster. He was at the Relief of Kimberley, Paardeburg, Driefontein, Diamond Hill and Belmont. Mentioned in Despatches. He retired on half-pay on 14 Oct 1908. In the photo, taken in 1891, he wears the uniform of an RSM. His scarlet dress tunic has a white collar with gold lace around the edge, and gold braid around his scarlet shoulder straps. He has an officer-style peaked forage cap. His medals are for the 1885 Egypt campaign which he gained whilst serving with the Coldstream Guards.
