Lieutenant-General Edward Chippindall CB

Edward Chippindall was born at Cheetham Hill, Manchester on 4 Oct 1827. He was the 3rd son of John Chippindall. He at first joined the 32nd Foot and fought at the siege of Mooltan, Cheniote and at Gujerat. He transferred to the 19th in Nov 1849 as a lieutenant. He was one of 5 officers of the 19th that served throughout the whole of the Crimean War, including Bulganak, Alma and Inkerman. He fought at McKinzie’s Farm and at the Redan before Sevastopol. He was wounded in the attack of 8 Sep 1855. He was brigade major to the Light Division from Oct 1855 and received all the available medals for the Crimea. After that war he was in India during the campaigns to suppress the Mutiny.  He commanded the 1st Battalion 19th in the Hazara Campaign of 1868, and the expedition against the tribes of the Black Mountain. He was mentioned in despatches in glowing terms.

On 13 Sep 1902 he visited a former officer of the 19th, Major Briscoe, at Quendon Court, Newport, Essex. He was in good health, but that evening, he had an apoplectic fit and never recovered consciousness. He died in the afternoon of the next day, at 2.40pm. His body was taken to his home at Barrow-upon-Soar in Leicestershire. There is a brass plaque to his memory in the choir vestry at Holy Trinity Church, Barrow-upon-Soar, and he is buried in the churchyard. The stained glass east window of the church was gifted by General Chippindall in 1890. The photo shows him in the scarlet and gold embroidered uniform of ADC to the Queen.
